It’s no surprise that buyers often compare both new and used cars. For a given price point, the market for potential cars explodes once you start looking away from new cars alone. Yes, you might give up the warranty, but if you’re looking for something unique, used cars provide a good value … provided you pick the right one. Bang for Your Buck takes a look at five used cars you could get with the money you’d spend on the new car we’ve tested recently — running the gamut from sensible to silly.
The Toyota Sienna is moderately refreshed for the 2015 model year, but it’s more than just a collection of good looks. The Sienna packs all-wheel-drive, a fuel-sipping V-6, and removable second-row captain’s chairs (which can expand the interior space to positively cavernous proportions). In its second-highest XLE trim, the Sienna also comes with second-row entertainment, a potent infotainment system, and heated leather seats. It’s not super-cheap, coming in at $41,770, but it’s got plenty of bark to back up the bite of the price. Let’s see what sort of counteroffensives the used-car market can muster:
5. 2013 Toyota Sienna XLE
Found on the Internet For: $40,900
Wait a second … a 2013 selling for 2015 prices? You would be correct — you’re not hallucinating — but you missed one important part. You see, this specific XLE comes with an aftermarket wheelchair access system, including a side ramp. These sorts of modifications aren’t cheap, and Braunability is a big name in the industry, so you’re paying for a level of access that is nigh impossible to recreate in a stock Sienna XLE.
4. 2011 Dodge Ram 3500
Found on the Internet For: $41,585
Do you want a minivan more for the cargo space than the ability to carry eight people? Well, perhaps you’ll be better off with a 2011 Dodge Ram 3500. It’s longer than a minivan, seats five in comfort, and it will haul whatever the hell you need it to. Sure, its 6.7-liter turbodiesel motor isn’t as efficient as the Sienna, and the rear dual wheels will take some getting used to, especially in thick urban environs, but that’s all stuff you can learn to live with over time, so long as the gas bills don’t put you in the poorhouse.
3. 2012 Porsche Cayenne
Found on the Internet For: $41,555
Maybe a crossover is all you need to keep your family covered. If you’re considering switching to a crossover, and you want something a bit “sportier” than a minivan, a Porsche Cayenne might be right up your alley. It looks like a Porsche inside and out, left-side ignition switch and all, which makes it immediately cooler than a minivan. Its V-6 is a fair bit beefier, as well. Kinda makes you wonder why you were even looking at a minivan in the first place, doesn’t it?
2. 2014 BMW X1 xDrive35i
Found on the Internet For: $40,988
If you’re like most American buyers, you’re looking at a minivan because you’ve just had your first child. Why buy more than you need to? A station wagon with a slight body lift will do just fine.
Oh, and here’s one right now.
1. 1957 Ford Thunderbird
Found on the Internet For: $41,000
You will be the coolest parent in town, dropping your kids off in a ’57 T-Bird.
And what’s more important than ensuring your child’s upward social mobility? Nothing, that’s what.
